Overlooking the historic James River, Gateway Plaza serves the city of Richmond as a threshold to its primary business district. Upon its completion in 2015, the remarkable multi-tenant office tower quickly became one of the leading addresses in the city.

Day and night, lighting engages a beautifully sculpted plaza and terrace, helping to welcome passersby and provide a place to dwell for office workers. Trees in the plaza’s tapered landscape planters, which mimic the topography of nearby islands formed in the James, are highlighted from below. Lighting also played an important part in creating an inviting daytime and nighttime presence for the off-street lobby. The floor to ceiling glass provides natural transparency, heightened at night by dramatic illumination of the lobby’s features, which include: “Clear Passage,” a commissioned stainless steel art piece; and four mosaics activating the core’s outward facing walls. Lighting recessed in the concrete ceiling and floor produce crisp revelation and shadow play. Gently flowing floor and pavement imbedded stainless steel ribbons evoke the movement of the nearby river and are seen sparkling after dark.
