This inspiring project is a commemoration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is the creation of a memorial to honor his national and international contributions to world peace through nonviolent social change. The memorial and park is located on the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC, midpoint between the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials. RBLD collaborated with fellow lighting professional David Mintz on the creation of the nighttime illumination of the park site, its sculpture and inscription walls, and supporting visitor center.
Lighting concerns focused on the visitor’s personal experience, and on the inseparable nighttime relationship between the Martin Luther King. Jr. Memorial site and surrounding memorials visible nearby. Harmonizing brightness and contrast with respect to the nearby structures was key to the design’s acceptance. The Memorial has been visited by millions since its opening in 2012.
