The panelists will present how light and lighting design play a fundamental role in everyday activities. They will also ask Congress to support efforts to advance research in this area. Randy had this to say about the significance of having a chance to speak directly to Congress:
It is important for us to take advantage of this kind of opportunity. We can help increase the profile of the lighting design profession and emphasize the importance of lighting’s role in shaping successful, sustainable spaces. Although there exists a casual acknowledgement that light is a contributor to productivity, comfort and well-being in the built environment, there is only a superficial understanding of the fundamental design and science behind it. Further, this can be a chance to help establish the research agenda for the coming years.
Randy Burkett Lighting Design has been at the forefront in advocating for light as a fundamental contributor to successful design since the firms founding. This includes environmentally focused design projects including one of the first Gold certified LEED CI design showrooms in North America with the Haworth Chicago showroom, development of code and master planning for municipalities that include sustainability targets, participation by staff in the on-going development of national energy standards such as IES/ASHRAE 90.1, and educational outreach in both professional and higher education settings.
